Controls & Dictation
1
Preparing to Use Voice Controls
Make sure the Cephable desktop app is installed on your computer
Select the profile you want to use on the home screen from the drop down menu and press the pencil icon to look inside/edit that profile.

2
Have at least one profile with a voice control. You will see the face icon with speech lines on the left side of the control summary buttons within your profile.

3
If you click on the control summary button and expand it, you can see that when you say, “bold” “make bold” or “bold text”, Cephable will then press “command + B”. Your windows profile will press “control + B” You can also “Edit” or “Remove” a voice control from this screen.

4
If you need support getting a different control profile with a voice command, please watch our tutorial, “Control Profiles for Cephable” for more information.
5
Starting Voice Controls
Return to the home screen of Cephable and press “Start Voice Controls”

6
The Voice Controls overlay will pop up at the bottom of your screen by default. Details on changing this default later in this tutorial.

7
When you start speaking, your speech will then show up in the voice controls overlay window. You can also pause/restart (play) voice controls at anytime by pressing the pink icon.

Voice Controls vs Dictation
What is the difference between voice controls and dictation in Cephable?
*Voice Controls – These are the words, short phrases, or even single sounds that are connected to an output that you want Cephable to run. See the “bold” example above. You can also see another example of voice controls within this shared profile here. (say “clear line” or say “delete” to press the associated keys)

9
*Dictation – When you use the default “trigger word” -> “type” – Cephable will type what you say.
For example, if you say – “type today is a wonderful day period” – Cephable will type “Today is a wonderful day.” in your notepad app or other app/website where you can type text.
In summary – When using dictation, Cephable types what you speak, and when using voice controls, Cephable listens for short cuts (words/phrases/sounds) that you have set up in your profile to do certain actions.

10
Using Voice Controls & Dictation Together
Let’s build on what we learned above and use the same Microsoft Word profile.
Make sure that Word or Notes app is open and that you are clicked into the text area.
Make sure Cephable’s Voice Controls are running.
In summary – When using dictation, Cephable types what you speak, and when using voice controls, Cephable listens for short cuts (words/phrases/sounds) that you have set up in your profile to do certain actions.

11
Use dictation by saying, “type hello everyone how are you question mark”
You should see the phrase in Word or Notes.

12
Now use voice control shortcuts to edit the text that you dictated.
Make sure you still clicked into the Word/Notes app
Say “select all” and watch the text highlight

13
Now say, “bold” and watch Cephable bold the text.

14
Practice the same sequence with “select all” and “delete” voice commands to clear your Notepad.
15
Advanced Voice Settings
To view the advanced voice settings, press the “Voice Settings” button on the bottom of Cephable’s homepage.

16
Automatically Start Voice
If this switch is turned on, your voice controls overlay will open automatically and process your speech whenever Cephable opens. This is really useful when you frequently use voice controls.

17
Optimistic Mode (Voice Control Sensitivity)
*When this switch is turned OFF the app remains in “Standard Mode”. This means that you can easily switch between using voice controls and dictation. This is the only mode where you can use dictation.
*When this switch is turned ON the app is then in “Optimistic Mode”. This means that Cephable adapts to varied speech patterns. Cephable actively finds the closest voice control to the speech that was processed. In Optimistic Mode – Cephable only listens for voice commands that are listed within the selected profile.
For example, if Cephable heard “bowl” instead of “bold” – it will still run the “bold” voice command in the profile since that was the closest command to the word processed.
*You CANNOT use dictation when you are in Optimistic Mode.
*We recommend Optimistic Mode…
- for people who don’t always consistently articulate words the same way each time.
- for people who are non-speaking or are AAC/partial AAC users, but still have some distinguishable sound/word approximations.
